Baby Boomers and the Project-Based Workforce | Workstreamer Blog

This is a short but interesting blog article about another article.

Harvard Business Publishing’s Tammy Erickson writes about the “project-based workforce.”

Personally, I find the concept of “working forever” interesting, because I’ve seen many people retire and then drop dead.

I’m also intrigued by the concept of “cyclical work,” taking part in a work project, then taking some time off, and then working on something else.

I’m resisting the impulse to say “cool.”

Also–there’s a lot to be said for working as long as one can, and it’s not just about money.

I believe that working at something we are passionate about gives us purpose, because we continue being involved in society, keeping work and social relationships active, and using our brains for problem solving.

Both articles are interesting, and I hope you get a chance to read them both.

Zappos Blogs: Health and Fitness: Baby Boomers: Walk the Years Away

Please read this short article on the Zappos Blogs.

If you are over fifty, like me (WAY over 50), I do recommend walking as a way to start exercising.

Here are my tips for being a successful walker:

  • Buy a great pair of walking sneakers or shoes
  • Invest in good thick socks
  • Start slowly–I began by getting off the bus one or two stops before my stop, and worked my way up from there. Then I picked a hill close by work–I live and work in Seattle, so I have a lot to choose from. I picked the hill to the downtown public library, which I go to a lot. That’s my reward.
  • Don’t try to power walk right away, especially if you do not exercise often. Just enjoy yourself, and listen to your body.

And that’s it, in my book anyway.

I’ve lost about twenty pounds since January, and I’m joining the “Y” this winter so I can use the pool.

My health is better, overall, and my depressive symptoms are under control for the first time in years.

Give it a try!

What’s a baby boomer, anyway? August 19, 2008

You may call yourself a baby boomer if you were one of the 76 million births after World War II, the years 1946-1964.

Here are some links for information about baby boomers:

After World War II, The U. S. economy was healthy (sigh), and people like my Dad, a high school graduate, got a job after he came out of the Air Force. Dad worked for New York State until he retired. We were never rich, but my parents owned a house, got a new car every few years, and were able to fill our bellies with lots of good food.

My dad grew up on a small farm in rural upstate New York. My grandfather grew enough food to feed his large family and sell some things to neighbors. It was the Depression, and times were tough. Every month or so, a neighbor would steal over to my grandfather’s farm and steal a chicken. My uncles wanted to chase him away, but they were always stopped by my grandfather.

Leave him be, boys. He’s a good man, he’s just trying to feed his family. I never met my grandfather because he died of a heart attack a few years after the start of World War II.

My father told that story every so often, to remind us that we had it good, compared to the lean years of the Depression.

Anyway, besides the house and the car, we had television.

Oh yes, black and white television, the subject of my next post.

Carol Burnett – Q & A (Questions & Answers) Tarzan Yell

I’ve been looking for a Carol Burnett Tarzan Yell for a long time.

This video runs over five minutes, and Carol’s yell is right at the end.

Aging Baby Boomers may Sleep Better With New Drug

Let’s hope third time’s the charm on this post.

My first attempt died when Live Writer quit on me.

Attempt number two was foiled when I posted to the wrong blog!

Anyhoo, Circadin is a new drug developed by a chemist and neurobiologist from Tel Aviv University.

Circadin replaces the hormone Melatonin in our aging bodies.

I sure hope it works–I find it harder to get, and stay, asleep these days.

If I did not have to work, to pay rent, pay off student loans, and buy personal items to keep myself from getting ripe, I would just stay home and blog all day long.

i have so many ideas for blogs, like a fiction blog, but then I have to post on a regular basis.

Alas, I must work, and I usually come home with a burned brain and aching feet.

I’ve been ignoring this blog, but I’m promising myself to post more often.

My Google alert, “baby boomer’s,” yields at least 2-3 ideas a day.

So hopefully I will get off my blogging duff and do more on blog #3.

One of my earliest memories is watching “I Love Lucy” on our black and white television.

This is classic.

Howl’s moving castle — with original film music ^^

I’ve watched three of Hayao Miyazaki’s films so far: Spirited Away, Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind, and Howl’s Moving Castle, which I finished today.

Up next is My Neighbor Totoro.

I’m not a big fan of Japanese animation films, but I love this guy’s stuff.

Why?

I love the animation, the expressions of the characters, and that the heroes of Miyazaki’s films, the children, take life (and danger) by the horns and do what’s right.

It’s been a fun day.
